WELCOME to the ‘New’ YANKEE STADIUM! The famous image of Babe Ruth greeting U.S. President, Warren G. Harding on April 24, 1923 is found on this RARE, Vintage 1923 original News Service Photo captured by the New York Times Wide World Photos. The ‘House that Ruth Built’ opened a week ago but the President was there in its inaugural season that April to see the new building that was hailed as the most majestic of the ballparks. Ruth of course did not disappoint, hitting a home run against the Washington Senators in a 4-0 win. This terrific photo captures Ruth shaking hands of Harding who is seated in his American flag draped box. Original press stamp and caption with date are on the reverse. Photograph measuring 8” x 10” has a chipped on the upper right corner but does not cut into the central image which is highlighted by superb contrast and razor sharp clarity. It has been professionally ‘double-matted’ and framed to dimensions measuring 15” x 17”. Photo is NOT attached to matting and can be easily slipped in and out of the framing if desired (note that the original caption is attached to the photo’s reverse as issued so our consignor made a copy of that caption to be displayed in the matting so a viewer can read and enjoy the story) ! A Vintage 1947 Original Photo depicting the New York Yankees. This is a RARE Large format 11” x 14” studio photo, TYPE 1st generation from the period on matt finish, double weight stock and were those usually made for player and team personnel at the time. Photo in very good condition has staples holes, wear and creasing around the corners and perimeter but should mat and frame up nicely as the central image is relatively unaffected exhibiting excellent contrast and crisp clarity. The names of the players on this World Series Championship squad are on a separate note strip which includes Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, a young Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto and manager Bucky Harris. A Historic and RARE, vintage 1922 ORIGINAL News Service Photo issued by Times Wide World Photos depicting the construction of the famous building known around the world as Yankee Stadium, “The House that Ruth Built”, in actuality, the Osborn Engineering Company in an amazing 284 days for the cost of $2.5 million. Original press stamp, date and caption are on the verso of this 8” x 10” with some chipping but all restricted to the white borders and does not cut into the all-important central image which is nothing short of spectacular with excellent contrast and crisp clarity (you can easily see the lettering of the Osborn sign on top of the work shed) ! This is the first ‘period’ specimen we have offered in over five years. While we have sold several original photos of Yankees Stadium being constructed over the years, none of those private collectors have any interest in parting with their examples anytime soon. The anchors of the Yankee Clipper as we’ll call this one is an interesting shot that we have not seen of Joe. Original newspaper clipping on the reverse of this 8” x 10” that was used in actual publication at the time in the pages of the New York Daily Mirror. From the time when questions were raised on DiMaggio and the health of his ailing heel and how experts speculated that he was pretty much done as a ballplayer. A Vintage 1932 Original News Service Photo issued by International News Photos depicting Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees being greeted by his mate, Lou Gehrig after slamming a home run. The bomb came on Opening Day against the defending American League Champs, the Philadelphia Athletics, shown catching is Hall of Famer, Mickey Cochrane. This is one of two home runs Ruth hit that day off of pitcher George Earnshaw (career home runs #612 and #613). Original press stamp on the verso of this 8” x 10” photo. Photo has a corner separation on the upper right but does not affect the central image. The Yankees would go on to retake the pennant that season from the Athletics and roll into the World Series where Ruth would perform his historical ‘called shot’ against the Cubs.
