Offered here is a late 1920's Babe Ruth single signed baseball in it's original box. This marvelous OAL sphere dates to the brief presidency of Ernest Barnard, who held the reins of the Junior Circuit from 1927 through 1931. This coincidentally figured to be the Babe's most prolific five-year stretch of home run heroics, with 255 round-trippers logged during that half decade. So you can be certain that the young recipient of this signed sphere saw it for the treasure it was, and the fact that it still resides in its original (though somewhat tattered) box further validates this assertion. The ball itself has benefited nicely from its cloistered existence, with the sweet spot signature rating an "8" in boldness. A couple small dots of toning skirt the edges of this important autograph, but the ball remains quite clean otherwise. Distinguishing this Babe Ruth single signed ball is its decided antiquity. As a slugger in pinstripes after the 1919 season, Ruth's autograph was solicited by legions of admirers. However, as a moundsman (star caliber though he was) in the less frenetic climate of Boston, his occasion to sign was comparatively infrequent. Offered here is a sweet spot Babe Ruth signing that certainly dates to his tenure with the Red Sox. Furthermore, the character of the signing demonstrated in this signature is speculated to trace to the period 1917-18, as Ruth's evolution in penmanship—in his formative years—can be plotted in its development. The ball is an OAL (Ban Johnson) and it's mildly stained. For that matter, a case could be advanced that the ball briefly served field duty. There's some intermittent staining in the form of a short linear impact blemish on the League president's panel. And near the Reach logo (east panel) there appears a small stain that may be construed as "tabacky." The nature of the stampings conclusively dates the ball to the period 1912-19 (which is stated in the attending LOA). Such is confirmed in the configuration of the Reach logo which is expressed in the so-called "single circle" (as the manufacturer, after 1919, adopted a "double circle" presentation). The central allure here, though, is the delectable Ruthian autograph projecting from the sweet spot. Per his wont in that early career era, his first name appears in quotation marks. Also worthy of note is that when the Babe's renown later blossomed as a mega-slugger, so too did the dimension of his autograph expand. The size of this scripting (dimensionally reduced, though abundantly conspicuous) is at variance from familiarly known Babe Ruth signatures. Simply stated, this is one of, if not the earliest single signed Babe Ruth baseballs in existence.
